>US allows Ukraine to hit Russian airports
The chief problem is that this isn't what's happening. What's happening is
>US allows US soldiers to obey Ukrainian orders to hit Russian airports
The weapon systems aren't fully under Ukrainian control, which a big part of why "US allows" is part of the discussion at all.
The picture simplifies too readily to "US attacks Russia", which is WW3.

Lesser problem:
>Russian invades Ukraine
this is one country attacking another country. The first word in 'WW3' is 'World'. The conflict so far has not extended much outside of Ukraine, despite Ukraine's occasional psychotic terror attack on Russian soil or even "Ukrainian soil" like Crimean beaches full of civilians.
This was already preceded by ten years of
>Ukraine attacks secessionist states in the Donbas
which also wasn't WW3, just like Israel attacking Gaza isn't (yet) WW3.
>brings thousands of North Korean soldiers
to rear parts of Kursk. So what? Western special forces have been 'volunteering' in Ukraine since the outset.

If you have a problem thnking of it in terms of WW3, just think of it in terms of "nuclear war with Russia". Right now, only Ukraine is at war with Russia. And despite the full support of NATO, Ukraine is losing very badly. NATO, having depletes its weapon systems and failed even to deter Yemen from blockading a sea route to Israel, and having helped to increase Russian veterancy and Russian familiarity with NATO weapon systems, is now not able to Russia in any capacity except with nukes.

Nukes are bad, OK? We also have different nukes: Russia has super-poisonous super-fallout world-ending nukes, and the US has clean backpack nukes for bunker-busting and disclaimable nuclear terrorism.

Ukraine attacks secessionist states in the Donbas

Let’s just stop here because I actually was in Donbas when it unrolled in 2013 -and guess what, there was zero fighting, zero ban on Russian language and all the other bullshit that Russia invented 10 years later.

The fighting in Donbas started the day Russian soldiers, with their official patches cowardly removed, crossed from Russia into Ukraine and started capturing administration buildings and killing resisting officials.

You can save your “secessionist” bullshit for more gullible audience, one that also believes stories of “crucified boy of Slavyansk”.

By the way, I was staying there, in Slavyansk, on my last trip in September 2013. And guess what - I was talking Russian to everyone, and nobody had even slightest feeling that in only half year Russian soldiers will invade.

...

>You can save your “secessionist” bullshit for more gullible audience,
I can't even imagine what the Minsk agreements look like through your propaganda filter. When Germany says, after the invasion, that there was ever any attempt to abide by them and it was just a ruse to give time for Ukraine to build up its forces, do you think that Russia let these "Russian forces" get bombed for no reason?
Why do you think that all that these non-secessionist stealth-Russian groups had "People's Republic of" names and communist iconography? To get better coverage from western media?

>I was there and didn't notice anything
I live in the US, and lived in a large blue city in 2020, and never saw a single BLM riot. Or anything about it at all beyond some graffiti. During the worst periods the parcels still came and everything operated smoothly. Actually living here, going outside, talking to people in person, you wouldn't think there were any political problems anywhere at all. Nor any notable crime outside of particularly bad places. School shootings? I haven't seen one, been near one, or know anyone who's been near one.
Your personal experience and the number of children that die to terrorist ordinance dropped in civilian centers, are actually very different things.

So yeah, I believe you. But I don't care. You being closer to Russia also just means that you'll reliably have a more irrational negative view of Russia. This is how all neighboring countries work the world over. You want to learn about something actually that Japan's done, you ask a Korean or a Chinese person.

Russia kept selling gas to Austria until Austria outright stopped paying for it just recently. The Nordstream 2 was active and funneling gas to Europe even as Europe was rapidly funnelling support to Ukraine, and would be today if the US didn't blow a hole in it with nary a protest. And the EU is still sanctioning itself to irrelevance, even threatening to cut off his nose that points towards China.

Why even attack someone like that? It's embarrassing. If you whip someone who doesn't want to be whipped, it's violence that you might feel good about. If you're whipping a masochist, you're just joining in his perversion.

@elftummy I think I was always suspicious of styrofoam, but can't say for sure. I definitely microwaved tons of soft plastic and plastic wrap, which isn't also remotely healthy and also not warned about at all.

Americans need more electric kettles, and a lot less plastic. Paper shopping bags, paper plates, paper cups, paper containers for food, paper everything. There are more trees than ever. Trees are actually not hard at all to farm in great numbers and turn into paper. Plastic should be extremely rare.

I am coming around to the idea that, long-term, the US becomes something more like the EU. shared defense and a few other things, but state identity becoming stronger over time as the federal mechanisms break down and national political coalitions like the Democrats decline to fix them.

when we think about the US breaking apart, we always think about the Southern states leaving, but why not California? why not the wealthy northern and western states with productive urban centers that are getting a raw deal, yoked to struggling southern economies but given less and less representation in the federal political mechanisms?

...

Peter Krupa »
@peter@thepit.social

thanks to Republican sabotage and Democratic neglect, the federal government hasn’t been solving problems for years, and is now set to be more or less permanently crippled (we know from past experience that the Democrats never roll back the damage that Republicans do, they just act as caretakers of the mess until the GOP recovers and gets back to wrecking again). it would make sense if people increasingly looked to their states for solutions.

...

Peter Krupa »
@peter@thepit.social

I am not saying this is a good idea or that it would be neat and tidy. it’s a terrible option with dire unknown consequences that would be messy as hell. but given that the GOP appears set to succeed in its efforts to fundamentally dismantle the federal administrative state, it seems to me much more likely a possibility than the national Democrats miraculously sweeping back to power and equally miraculously finding a spine.

...

Jenniferplusplus »
@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io

@peter But it also seems less likely than republicans using the power of the federal government to coerce compliance from the states that don't agree with them

...

Peter Krupa »
@peter@thepit.social

@jenniferplusplus they will certainly try, but it will be hard to actually do enforcement when everything else they are doing is focused on cutting budget and staff. when California says “make me” and the best the federal gov can do is send two Federal Marshals with revolvers…..

even now, a ton of federal power exists because everyone agrees it exists, not because it’s a real physical thing.

...

Jenniferplusplus »
@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io

@peter They're not cutting budget or staff. They're moving budget from civil services into violence, and replacing replacing principled civil servants with loyalists.

I really hope you're right. I hope they're so incompetent that they can't actually consolidate any real power. I just don't think that's something we can count on.

...

Peter Krupa »
@peter@thepit.social

@jenniferplusplus yeah but properly doing state violence is 20% guys with guns and 80% logistics. they are gutting the logisitcs.

I’m not saying this is something anyone can “count on,” just that it’s a scenario that makes sense in my head for “where do things go from here??” and either way, the GOP-controlled states are in for a very bad time.

Jeff Bell »
@belljeff@mastodon.social

@peter I hate this outcome, agree it seems plausible, but would like the more or less functioning states to start acting as testing grounds to workshop out of the structural problems. Let’s try ranked choice voting, campaign finance reforms at the local level, fix gerrymandering (even in dem states), etc.

Some states have already been workshopping authoritarianism for a generation. Why not try the opposite where it may be possible, too?

...

Peter Krupa »
@peter@thepit.social

@belljeff yeah, and I can also imagine a **very** long-term scenario where the US has a soft break-up, but pulls back together once many of the states get their own houses in order.

...

Jeff Bell »
@belljeff@mastodon.social

@peter there’s also the Civil War model where the nature of the awful crisis itself is exactly what expanded the powers and authorities of the federal government. It’s just that that time the good guys held the keys to the federal gov - maybe down the line they will too, or not.

Either way I think we have some crises in the pipeline - constitutional and otherwise - that will change our conception as a nation.

Nathaniel Swigger »
@nswigger@mstdn.party

@belljeff @peter My pessimism about this stems from my lack of faith in the states. CA and NY Democratic Parties are basically just job clubs that see themselves as neo-liberal-but-cool-with-gays. I doubt we’ll see a ton of regulatory efforts or pushback there. There’s the potential for reform in places like Colorado or Illinois, where there’s at least some potential for responsiveness, but man it is bleak out there.

...

Peter Krupa »
@peter@thepit.social

@nswigger @belljeff I don’t picture it as a moral stance but a selfish/practical one. might evolve into state pride/identity and rah rah human rights, but the impetus would be something like “fuck this, we’re doing our own trade deal with China” or whatever.

@peter I don't think this is necessarily the case. It is if we fail to offer a better option. It's a reasonable default case. But in a moment of this much disruption, it's also possible to visualize a USA that actually lives up to its promises (one person one vote, equal opportunity, rule of law, etc etc). tbh, does it really matter? youre not disenfranchising anyone by calling yourself ace.

a label isnt a box. you're not a piece of fruit that has to either be an apple, or an orange

a label is there to tell other people how to treat you, not to control how you feel.

one of the greatest reliefs to me was that i can call myself ace. even if i get horny sometimes. even if i have a headmate who would absolutely fuck a dragon if she could. even if i enjoy posting nudes online. even if it really is just abysmally low libido from HRT, or trauma turning me off.

i can use the label ace to describe how other people should treat me, and thats what matters.

I've just joined Bluesky to explore how it works, since I've never tried it before. The first thing I noticed was a series of (serious) errors in the Italian translation. But this one really stood out:

- "cogli" might be technically acceptable, but it's archaic and confusing in modern usage.
- "Impara all'algoritmo" is a glaring error that teachers have been trying to correct for years. It’s like saying "learn to the algorithm" instead of "teach the algorithm."

So, my question is: was this translation done by poorly skilled Italians, or did they skip involving a native Italian speaker altogether?

Screenshot of Bluesky onboarding checklist in Italian. It displays two tasks:

'Metti like a 10 post - Impara all'algoritmo cosa ti piace' with a partially filled progress circle.
'Segui 7 account - Bluesky è meglio cogli amici!' with an empty progress circle.

The text contains two notable language issues: 'Impara all'algoritmo' should be 'Insegna all'algoritmo,' and 'cogli amici' should be 'con gli amici.

@stefano the risk is, in the months to come, to have Europeans and their languages positioned at the bottom of the priority lists. I fear that corporations will somehow be impacted by the politics. Open source software will have a key role to ensure everybody keeps access to software wherever on the globe (“he” will probably use export regulations to starve us even further), so there might be funny times on the IT/phone side. (Not sure we will even continue being able to use apple devices for instance or any us-based cloud. I was considering purchasing a new iphone, I’m stuck with anxious reflections).

@EnigmaRotor This is one of the reasons why I got deeper with the Pixel and GrapheneOS. I've replaced almost all the services with self hosted ones (I haven't been using many proprietary solutions on my phones - photos are on Nextcloud, push notifications are routed via ntfy, etc.)
I think that Open Source will have a key role - more than ever - in our future.

We can't and shouldn't base our (digital) existence on the services provided by big tech companies.

.social is a small instance so we don’t participate in the big migrations much, but we have seen monthly new accounts increase 10%, active users increase by 15% and overall activity by 30%. It’s not back to where we were when we launched two years ago but definitely a positive direction.

Yikes! Other authors, be very careful and make sure you, or your agent, keeps an eye on contracts! Because mine is more experienced, he spotted the below right away, but keep an eye out for the below.

1. Do not give publishers permission to train their AI on your work, even internally. WTF? A publisher tried to sneak this in!

2. Despite what publishers tell you, demand your audiobook should be done by humans and your cover should be done by humans. Publishers love AI despite what they tell you!

3. Do not let publishers dictate giving you a lower advance *because* you don't have a platform. This is bullshit, especially since they have all the PR connections.

4. Do not let them say anything about how many hours you should spend promoting your book. Make this low as possible or even eliminate it altogether. They have all the PR connections. You don't. Make it their fault you don't make back their advance, not you, because they can decline to publish you in the future and you won't have numbers to prove they failed in PR.

5. Don't let publishers tell you virtual book tours don't generate returns on investment and isn't worth having their publicist do. No, fuck that shit! Because my agent is experienced, he said fuck that straight away! If you want your releases to be virtual, say so!

And finally,

6. Do not let them give you a low advance. A lower advance says they don't have to invest in you as much to get back that investment. They should do the bulk of the publishing work, not you, so always ask for higher advances, always! Even if you don't think you'll make back that advance. Go higher. This will force them to do something about their investment in you!

@WeirdWriter

This is all solid advice.

I self-published a book ages ago, and despite being objectively terrible as a writer it didn't do *that* badly. If you're going with a proper publisher and they're proposing to offload the marketing and whatnot onto you, you might as well just self-publish and do print-on-demand at that point because at least there won't be any surprises and it keeps your options open.

...

Robert Kingett »
@WeirdWriter@caneandable.social

@rastilin I think there is no such thing as proper publisher. There’s traditional. There’s small presses, and then there’s print on demand. For me, print on demand is never going to work because of the lack of advance, and, because I don’t have the money to Put into marketing and PR anyway. Besides, I already have an agent but I’m also a hybrid author. I do small presses / indie publishers. I’s almost the same thing as print on demand. No advance, but you don’t have to do everything yourself.

...

Nervensäge 💐 »
@Irisfreundin@troet.cafe

@WeirdWriter @rastilin
I'm a self publisher for more than 20 years. I always do print on demand because my books are for a small target group and I never could sell an edition. I sell some 20 books per year of every volume when the lections start in spring and autumn (it's a lexicon).

Whitmad »
@whitmad@wandering.shop

@WeirdWriter

On trying to maximise the advance: I attended a talk by a successful published author who advised asking for a lower advance to increase the chances of earning out. He said most books fail to earn out and if your first book fails, that can be an obstacle to getting the next one published.

I have no personal knowledge, just reporting what I heard.

...

Petra van Cronenburg »
@NatureMC@mastodon.online

@whitmad Also publishers like to tell this to their authors to pay less. A guarantee sum in advance is your garantee to earn something at all.

If you get a next contract depends not on they way of being payed but on the number of copies sold and the potential of your planned books/personality.
Big publishers rarely buy one-offs, they also negotiate what you have planned for the future and how reliably you deliver.

@WeirdWriter

...

Robert Kingett »

@NatureMC @whitmad Bingo! Same thing my agent said! Yep! I don’t know if I should put some of the advance into marketing or not. Advice?

@WeirdWriter The best is to ask your agency. They know your market and how it works. @whitmad

Petra van Cronenburg »
@NatureMC@mastodon.online

@WeirdWriter Thank you for the important advice.

Actually, all this should be self-evident. Unfortunately, despite my agency, I've found that I got one contract with a large publisher also because I was very active on social media with a large following at the time. Colleagues who refused to use the big platforms were not offered a contract.

...

Robert Kingett »
@WeirdWriter@caneandable.social

@NatureMC Yep not shocking at all. They always try to capture your platform. Makes it much easier on them and they don’t have to do as much PR. Because I don’t have that kind of audience, have to go a different route

...

@kingdomkrumb@mstdn.party

@WeirdWriter Speaking of AI and contracts, it’s now super easy to copy and paste a legal contract into chatGPT (or some other LLM) and ask it questions about the contract in layman’s terms. I found it useful. Better than wading through boilerplate legalese.

"Tesla's vehicles have the highest fatal accident rate among all car brands in America, according to a recent study that analyzed data from the U.S. Fatality Analysis Reporting System."

Tesla's fatality rate is double the national average. Driver behavior is a contributing factor to the high number of deaths (i.e. shitty-driving assholes are more likely to buy Teslas and die or kill someone else while driving them).
