Hey bloggers and if you want readers, if you want to make it easy to share your new thing, seriously stop hiding your RSS feeds. If I can't find your RSS feed, I just won't bother with following you or reading future work from you. If I absolutely need a blog in my life I will hunt it down but you get 5 minutes. If you hidden it so well I can't find it, your publication will never be read or shared again by me unless it crosses my path again and the chances of that happening are far slimmer than you think. Make it easy to follow you. Make it easy to keep up with posts without giving you my email. At least 99% of the stuff I share comes from RSS feeds. If you want more readers, wave your RSS feed like a banner!

Yikes, the FOMO is certainly not worth the accessibility nightmare this Bluesky website is.

It's a perfect example of usable, but not accessible.

It's a bunch of labeled elements with no structure whatsoever so you're tabbing through endless links, buttons, and links, and buttons, and links, and buttons, to get somewhere. Forget reading a thread with replies, that will take you forever because there is no structure, at all, to aid in navigation. No landmarks, no heading structure, no headings at all, just links and buttons, links and buttons, and the search is on some different page so I can't even get back to the top quickly. Blind people can have Bluesky because I don't have FOMO.

@GossiTheDog I am pretty convinced at this point that the biggest reason for instability in so-called production networks is because of the enterprises' addiction to professional software solutions with support contracts.

If production environments were run with the software most of us techs would actually prefer to use, companies would save money and reliability would increase.

But businesses need that support contract, they need a phone number to call and yell at when shit goes down. Everything is a mystical black box, and IT professionals are basically just coordinating vendor support. No one knows how anything works anymore.

People who vote Democrat don't want bigotry and genocide. They want a candidate that cares about them and their family. They want a candidate that actually improves their lives. The Democrats ran as GOP lite, and got their asses handed to them for it.

If the center left of this country wanted "anti-woke" bullshit and mass human rights abuses, they would vote Republican.

This all goes back to DELIVERISM. Deliverism is the way to do politics. Promise your voters a couple of helpful and achievable things they want, actually do them, and you will win every time.

Politics has been a liar's game for too long. Deliverism is the way out of this.

You may ask, "why have the Democrats not adopted this fairly obvious strategy?". The answer is simple: their class interests are directly opposed to genuinely popular governance. They profit from mass incarceration, forever wars, and endless fundraising. They have no incentive to actually deliver anything except lukewarm acceptance of some minority populations.

Friendly reminder to folks on Fedi: the engagement *you* see on a post might not be the engagement the *poster* sees.

Take my silly polls, for instance. I occasionally see comments saying "you'd have more responses if it said [variable]".

Those commenters probably can't see the responses, so they assume few are responding.

My last poll has over 1200 responses, but federation might not show *you* all of them. And that's OK! But don't assume what you see is what others see here.

This can fool us into thinking a post doesn't have nasty replies, or replies answering the question, or replyfolk being replyfolk, etc.

which shows your acceptance of someone's pronouns is conditional on you approving of them, meaning the second you don't like something a trans person does you'll misgender us, too

pronouns and names are not jokes

@tillybridges You're technically right. And I won't do it. But I do want to get under their skin. It is not that I am insisting they are a woman. It's more that I'm withdrawing respect. Besides, not like Elon has any dysphoria to aggravate or trigger.

In any case there is no way I will do it. It's just low hanging fruit.

When a cis man is being like this, as a trans woman I feel no reason to validate any part of him. He will dismiss me in any event. The only reason I won't do it is because it is too easy.

I'd rather play on his fears and anxieties...particularly the ones about his daughter. I want him to feel like he is fighting a losing battle.

@FinalOverdrive you're entirely misunderstanding the point

@vegafjord I don't understand. Could you expand a bit?

...

the fly »
@vegafjord@freeradical.zone

@szakib You could determine the wellness of a language based on the healthiness of its words.

Unhealthy words are for instance "leader", "rich", "investment“, "CEO", "state", "job".

We can remediate these words to healthy words that encourages healthy relationship with our peers and All That Is.

A leader as in one who guides their peers, can be relighted to guider. An investment as in a landgrab, can be relighted to engripment. Somebody rich as in diverse, can be relighted to bloom.

...

szakib »
@szakib@freeradical.zone

@vegafjord Since language is a social construct, an implicit common agreement, what you are proposing is only possible if you manage to convince the majority (or at least a significant portion) to use your words and your definitions of them. English is spoken by about 1.5 bilion people. How are you going to convince at least a hundred million?

...

the fly »
@vegafjord@freeradical.zone

@szakib Im not trying to convince people to use my words, but to realize that our language is sick and needs healing. Im only trying to ignite people into realizing that our language isnt sacred and can be messed around with to the benefit of Mother Earth and humanity.

To not see the importance of inspecting our words, is to let unhealthy attitudes flourish. If we want to heal Mother Earth, we need to heal our language. One word at a time.

Hell, on big enough servers the latest version of PeerTube even has LOCAL llm transcription services.

My instance doesn't have it because it needs a LOT of resources to install, which far outweighs the use case. Mmmmaybe if it also provided accurate translations but even then I would still need to migrate to a larger machine, so still not worth it. Hostin ain't cheap lol.
